Yesterday, the Nigerian branch of the West African Examinations Council, WAEC, made public its intention to switch to a CBE format for the next administration of the SSCE.
This was announced by the examination organisation in a statement signed by Moyosola Adesina, the unit’s acting head of public affairs.
According to WAEC’s announcement, the initiative’s first phase would begin in February 2024 with the administration of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for independent applicants.

“WAEC Nigeria to conduct Computer Based WASSCE for Private Candidates,” the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) in Nigeria plans to switch its WASSCE for private candidates from a paper and pencil test to a computer-based examination (CBE) in order to bring it in line with international standards.

WASSCE for private applicants, 2024 The first series is scheduled to take place in February 2024, marking the beginning of the new process.
The essay and practical papers will be a mix, with questions shown on screen and applicants filling out response booklets to demonstrate their knowledge. The objective assessments will be administered entirely on computers.

“In order to allow applicants to acquaint themselves with the new examination platform, plans have been finalised for a Mock Examination to be performed in February 2024, before the examination starts.
To that end, the Council strongly advises any and all potential candidates to brush up on their computer knowledge and be ready to fully embrace this innovation.
According to the Council’s mission statement, “As Africa’s foremost examining body, providing qualitative and reliable educational assessment, encouraging academic and moral excellence, it is the vision of the Council that in the near future, all its examinations will be delivered via the computer.”
