The Afam 5 GT unit 20 Gas Turbine power-generating unit in Okoloma – Afam, Ndoki in the Oyigbo Local Government Area of Rivers State has been rehabilitated, TransAfam Power Ltd (a part of Transcorp Group) said. The rehabilitated unit has been successfully turned on and connected to the national grid, giving it 138MW more power than it had before.
Engr. Vincent Ozoude, who is the MD/CEO of Transafam Power Limited, was very happy with the newly remodeled unit, which can power up to 100,000 homes a year. “Since March 2021, when we took over running the Afam Power Plant, we have been working hard to make the plant live up to its full potential. Before we took over, GT20 had been out of service for more than 15 years, so we are glad that we were able to fix it.
We’re happy to have done this with a mix of our own resources and help from other local technical experts. About 20% of the rehabilitation project was done with help from foreign experts, which shows our commitment to developing local content, Ozoude said.

Ozoude also thanked the company’s host community, Okoloma-Ndoki, and other stakeholders. “It’s amazing how far we’ve come since we took over. The average production was 48MW when we took over, but we increased it to 120MW within the first two months,” he said.
Dr. Owen Omogiafo, President and Group CEO of Transcorp, was there with members of the Technical Committee of the Board of Directors. He was happy about the commissioning of the rehabilitated Afam 5 GT 20 power generating unit and emphasized its importance to Transcorp Group and its commitment to changing the power sector in Nigeria.

In 2013, Transcorp Group’s power subsidiary, Transcorp Power Limited (TPL), bought the 972MW gas-fired Ughelli Power Plant. Since then, it has changed in a huge way. With the purchase of Afam Power Plc, Transcorp’s position as a key player in the power sector has become even stronger.
