MTN has announced its ambitious target of achieving a 95% broadband population coverage across its operational areas by 2025, up from the 88% recorded in 2022. The telecom operator is actively pursuing partnerships with various satellite service providers, including Elon Musk’s Starlink, to meet its broadband goals.

According to a press release from MTN, enterprise-grade trials for SpaceX’s Starlink are underway in Rwanda and Nigeria. The company is also engaged in several ongoing projects, such as upcoming direct-to-cell testing in Ghana and South Africa in collaboration with Lynk Global. Additionally, discussions are in progress with suppliers like AST SpaceMobile for testing in South Sudan and Nigeria.
MTN’s Group Chief Technology and Information Officer, Mazen Mroué, emphasized the importance of partnerships in achieving their strategic intent of “Leading digital solutions for Africa’s progress” by 2025. Mroué highlighted the urgency of the matter and acknowledged that collaboration is essential.

He explained that, in addition to their efforts in narrowing coverage gaps in rural areas through terrestrial networks, MTN is exploring satellite connectivity, particularly low earth orbit (LEO) satellite connectivity. This approach aims to connect remote and rural areas, enhance mobile connectivity, and improve overall network resilience.

The CTO expressed optimism that these partnerships would play a crucial role in reaching the 95% broadband population coverage goal by 2025, ultimately aiming for universal access in the longer term.
