The Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike in Abia has enrolled 6,802 students for the academic years 2021/2022 and 2022/2023.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Maduebibisi Iwe, revealed in his address that the institution had “married” the 2022/2023 class with their colleagues from the 2021/2022 session “in a bid to accommodate outstanding admissions” on Saturday.
According to Iwe, the last enrollment at the institution was in October of 2021. All sorts of upheavals in the country’s higher education system, he said, were to blame for the recent development.
The academic calendar was thrown off when the Academic Staff Union of Universities went on strike for eight months.

The vice chancellor broke down the matriculants by session, reporting 2,537 students for the 2021–2022, and 3,532 for the 2022–2023.
In addition, he said that the institution accepted 553 postgraduate students and 180 students into its continuing education programme for the next 2021–2022.
He thinks this number is woefully insufficient in light of the vast pool of applicants to the institution. Iwe urged the incoming class of undergraduates to give their academic pursuits their full attention.

He urged students to stay away from cults and other anti-social groups, saying that the school would not tolerate their presence. Iwe said, “We will begin enforcing moral rules throughout the campus very soon.
Those who “allow themselves to be lured and initiated into cult groups shall be shown the way out of this school,” the letter reads.
