As a result of Ghana’s elimination from the 2022 FIFA World Cup, head coach Otto Addo has resigned. Ghana was eliminated from the tournament after finishing last in Group H after losing to Portugal and Uruguay.
After being eliminated, Addo announced that he will step down as Ghana’s national team coach.
“As I have said, I planned to retire after the World Cup.”
At the present, Addo and his family envision their future in Germany, and he enjoys his work at Dortmund.
Borussia Dortmund’s talent coach also said that he would have resigned from Ghana’s position even if they had won the World Cup.
“I stated I’d leave after the World Cup even if we won,” Addo said.
With his quit, Addo became the fourth national team head coach to call it quits after being ousted from the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
He joins Roberto Martinez (Belgium), Carlos Queiroz (Iran), and Gerardo Martino (Mexico) as managers who resigned immediately after their teams were eliminated from the World Cup.
The nomination of the 47-year-old former Ghana international, who was born in Germany and played for the Black Stars in their maiden World Cup finals berth in 2006, came as a surprise.
He took over between Ghana’s ouster from the Africa Cup of Nations finals in January and their March World Cup qualifying playoff match against Nigeria.
His only prior coaching experience was with Hamburg and Borussia Dortmund junior squads.
As Ghana edged out African superpower Nigeria for a spot in the Qatar World Cup, he had former Newcastle United and Brighton & Hove Albion manager Chris Hughton as his counsel.
With Addo’s departure, Ghana must act fast to find a new coach before the start of their Africa Cup of Nations qualification game in March.
