FIFA, the international football governing body, punished Uruguayan captain Diego Godin and forward Edinson Cavani for one match apiece on Friday.
The four Uruguayan football players received these various match suspensions as a result of their participation in confronting a referee, Daniel Siebert, during their World Cup game against Ghana.
FIFA launched legal action against the players who violently insulted the referee after exiting the tournament in Qatar after defeating Ghana 2-0 in their last group encounter on December 2.
Uruguay had one guaranteed 50% shot in the last 16 in Group H deciders when South Korea struck in stoppage time to defeat Portugal 2-1.
The Koreans advanced because they scored one goal more than the South Americans in their three matches.
The German referee, Siebert, chose not to award penalties for challenges on Darwin Nunez in the initial half and Cavani in the closing minutes, with striker Luis Suarez stating after the game that FIFA was “against Uruguay”.
The players will also be required to do community service relating to football and will face penalties of up to 20,000 Swiss francs ($21,701).
According to The Goal, the Uruguayan FA was also fined 50,000 Swiss francs for the behavior of its spectators and team personnel.
Uruguay has also been forced to shut down part of its stadium for its next FIFA “A” international match as hosts.
