According to statements made by Governor Babagana Zulum, Borno state is approximately 90% ready for elections to commence.
On Friday, January 6, Zulum stated that the security situation in Borno had significantly improved while he was fielding questions from reporters at the presidential palace in Abuja.
He went on to reveal that his administration is striving to rehabilitate and resettle residents who had been forced from their homes as a result of the insurgency.
Zulum said;
“During the election in 2015, the citizens of Borno state cast their ballots.
They exercised their right to vote during the elections held in 2019.
“Are you able to compare the state of the nation’s security in the year 2019 with that of 2015 and the present?”
Because of the significant and nearly 90 percent increase in the level of security that has been implemented, we do not face any challenges at this time.
On election day, anyone who are qualified to vote are free to show up in Borno State and cast their ballots without interference from the authorities here.
“We are grateful that there has been a significant improvement in the situation of Borno’s security in recent months.
At this point, not only are we doing extremely well, but the process of rehabilitation and resettlement is also proceeding quite successfully.
“We are looking forward to seeing how we can reconstruct the Maiduguri, Gamborun-Gala road, and then the Maiduguri-Banke road in order to open up opportunities for the people to earn opportunities to earn their means of livelihood.”
Zulum further disclosed that the capital city of Borno, Maiduguri, does not currently host an official camp for people who have been displaced from their homes due to conflict.
He added;
As I mentioned previously, we cleared out all of the official IDP camps in the Maiduguri Metropolitan Council and the Gere Local Government Area around a year ago.
“At this time, we do not have any official IDP camps within Maiduguri Metropolitan Council; the illegal camps will also be closed in the coming few months,” said the spokesperson for the council.
