On Tuesday, Governor Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State expressed optimism that Nigerians would soon experience the positive outcomes of fuel subsidy removal. During the inauguration of the second phase of the state’s palliative distribution in Gombe, he mentioned that President Bola Tinubu, in collaboration with state governors, was actively working to alleviate the challenges arising from the removal of petrol subsidy.
Governor Yahaya emphasized ongoing investments aimed at lifting Nigerians out of the current economic difficulties. He conveyed his hope that, with the collective determination of Mr. President and the governors, the hardships resulting from subsidy removal would soon be addressed. He highlighted the withdrawal of fuel subsidy as the primary cause of the current challenges but noted that efforts were underway to enhance local petroleum production, with the Port Harcourt refinery already resuming production.

The governor expressed confidence that locally refined petroleum products would soon be available to the public at more affordable prices. He commended the patience of residents of Gombe State and Nigerians in general since the subsidy removal, assuring them of better days ahead.

Regarding the palliative distribution, Governor Yahaya explained that it targeted the poor and vulnerable in the state’s 2,988 polling units. Each polling unit was expected to benefit at least 30 individuals, with a total of about 90,000 people benefiting from this phase. He urged the committee overseeing the distribution to ensure that the food items reached those in need.
Governor Yahaya noted that the current palliative effort would complement the first phase, which assisted 420,000 individuals in August 2023. However, it’s worth mentioning that following the event, and after the governor and other government officials had left, suspected thugs took advantage and absconded with some of the food items, overwhelming the security personnel at the venue.
