Over 300 people in Nigeria’s North West have received training from the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) on the use of JAMB’s recently launched online platforms, which aim to streamline the application and admissions process for universities.
At Monday’s training launch in Zaria, JAMB Registrar Prof. Ishaq Oloyede made the announcement.
“Intensive training and automation of curriculum, accreditation, and general administration concerns among JAMB regulatory bodies and Institutions in the North-West” was the focus of the workshop.
According to Oloyede, who joined the conference through the Zoom platform, the purpose of the training was to educate institutions and regulatory bodies on how to make the most of the Integrated Brochure and Syllabus System (IBASS) and the Central Admission Processing System (CAPS).
As a result, he encouraged the institutions to make use of the channels of communication given by the platform, noting that it had enabled a smooth synergy among the industry’s major players.
According to Oloyede, the new platform eliminates the tedium of the previous method by making the process quicker, faster, and simpler for all parties involved.
Before the workshop began, Prof. Kabir Bala, Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria, said it would allow participants to interact with other stakeholders to resolve the ambiguities in the JAMB admission procedures.
Bala, who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Academics, Professor Danladi Ameh, said that the platform would assist decrease costs and speed up efficient service delivery, and that it would also enable institutions avoid time-consuming trips to Abuja.
When asked about the technical side of IBASS and CAPS, Mr. Aliyu Yakubu of JAMB’s Admissions Department claimed they had been enhanced to also act as communication platforms.
Initially, he explained, the board had to manually (hardcopy) receive correspondences from NUC, NCCE, and NBTE, which slowed down the admissions process. However, now, thanks to the platforms, communication between the regulatory agencies, JAMB, and universities across the country is much more efficient.
Yakubu said that the workshops will show and encourage local universities to make better use of digital resources.
All seven states in the zone were represented by their Vice Chancellors, Rectors, Provosts, Registrars, and Admissions Officers.
The states involved include Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto, and Zamfara.
